Nutritional supplements including carotenoids have been associated with a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. However, few studies have assessed their effect on insulin sensitivity in healthy adults. To examine the effect of four weeks of carotenoid supplementation (500 mg/d) on the insulin sensitivity of overweight healthy adults. Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Twenty-five healthy volunteers were randomly allocated to receive either carotenoid-rich or placebo capsules for four weeks. The glycaemic response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was used to assess insulin sensitivity. Carotenoid supplementation did not change OGTT-derived measures of insulin sensitivity compared to placebo. Carotenoid supplementation for four weeks did not improve insulin sensitivity of overweight healthy adults compared to placebo. These findings are in contrast to previous studies in which carotenoid supplementation was associated with improved insulin sensitivity.Q:
